“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.” — The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
I’ve been telling stories for as long as I can remember. Growing up in remote communities without TV, I turned to books and my boundless imagination for entertainment. From Anna Sewell’s Black Beauty and the classics of Charles Dickens to the sweeping tales of Tad Williams and the intricate worlds of Jean M. Auel, my love of reading was insatiable. If there was a table of dusty, second-hand books, you’d find me scouring it for my next great adventure.
Writing has always been a constant in my life, whether crafting factual narratives or diving into fictional worlds. Over the past 19 years, I’ve spent 10 immersed in journalism, working as a photo editor, production editor, journalist, and senior editor. Those years honed my skills in shaping stories, uncovering truths, and bringing ideas to life. Now, I’m applying that same passion to my fiction.
My debut novel, Dirt Eaters, proves it’s never too late to follow your passion. Set in a world reshaped by catastrophe, the story follows Sarei, a survivor-turned-outsider grappling with humanity’s uneasy evolution. It’s a tale of survival, sacrifice, and hope against all odds, and it’s just the beginning of my foray into publishing.
When I’m not writing, my interests are just as varied as the twists in my stories. I’m a self-taught artist, known for bold watercolour creations and line work that blend the ordinary with the ethereal. I’ve also spent time digging into ancient history – literally – by volunteering and working at archaeological and palaeontological digs.
I share my home in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, with my loyal dog, Honey B, who is always up for an adventure or a nap by my side and my two curious and mischievous rabbits, Greyling and Hawkins. There’s a few others along for the ride; the eldest daughter and her amazing kids, middler daughter, her dog and four guinea pigs, and the younger and her two chinchillas. Together, they bring endless joy and inspiration to my life as I continue to explore my passions for storytelling, art, and Canada’s vast wilderness.
